One Year Anniversary

It has been one year today since I started this blog because I keenly felt the temporary absence of Gimundo.com, my original source for reading good news regularly.  I am reposting their list of positive websites for you to use as sources for good news to balance out all the other stuff you get elsewhere.  The existing articles will remain online for about two weeks, so if there are any you wish to save or print out, I recommend you pull them off the site quickly as I will be closing up shop and using my blogging time and funds to work on my other blogs:

http://mysticangelhealing.net
http://slicesofmylife.net
http://ultravioletlove.com

I plan to devote more time to my other writing, including the above sites, but I carry away from this blog the experience and discipline of blogging pretty much daily and focusing on the positive side of news.  Thank you for your readership.  Namaste!  Have a good news day!

Haiti Children Rescued from Destroyed Orphanage

Most of the children in the Bresma Orphanage already had adoptive parents waiting for them when the earthquake hit.  Not all of the orphans have been accounted for, but the survivors and the two sisters who were caring for them have now been flown to safekeeping in Pittsburgh.

Good News Everywhere You Turn

Gimundo.com has provided us with a list of 25 upbeat websites to continue feeding ourselves good news every day.  If you haven't signed up yet for Gimundo.com's e-newsletter, you owe to yourself to do so.  This website is what inspired me to start my all good news blog.  When gimundo.com had to close up shop for a while, it left a gaping hole, so I started this site to help fill the gap.  Thursday is our one-year anniversary for starting this blog.  I am planning to close this blog that day, although I will continue posting good news items on Facebook.  Thank you for your readership this past year.  I've enjoyed being part of your lives.

People Helping People in a Time of Dire Need

Every tragedy has the potential for revealing great humanity.  The stories of people, who just happened to be in Haiti during the earthquake, are starting to surface.  People who were in a hotel that wasn't damaged suddenly turned into compassionate assistances to those who were administering medical aid to the wounded.

Ever wonder what you can do to help people in other places?  It's easier than you think.  The link below takes you to an article about a textile business that is making it possible to lessen human trafficking by giving women opportunities for economic stability.  Consider helping them to help themselves.

The Good News is That We Can Help the People of Haiti

There is not much by way of good news coming from the scene of major earthquake devastation in Haiti.  Destruction is extensive, death tolls are in the tens of thousands, and supplies of all kinds are needed desperately.  But there is some good news in the midst of the destruction.  The good news is that each one of us can help by making a donation, however big or small, to one of the respected and trusted humanitarian efforts participating in rescuing and helping the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.  Even the smallest donation will help these people, so what are we waiting for?  Following are just a few links of reputable organizations ready to receive your donations.  Please give generously and responsibly.  It's much better to make donations to organizations who are already in a position to help.  There are many others, but the following three links are ready to accept your donations and are in a position to put them to use in Haiti immediately.

The International Red Cross:

This is a Military Mission!

Imagine a world where armies and navies exist only to rush to the aid of victims of natural disasters.  No launching of rockets, no bombing of cities, no machine gun fire.  US military forces are being rushed to the aid of earthquake-devasted Haiti. That's a mission I can believe in whole-heartedly.

Winter Wonderland in England

While I sit here in the Seattle area, marveling at the extremely moderate January weather we are having, my friends in the United Kingdom are being treated to a huge blast of winter.  Some are not enjoying the treatment very much, but others, like Catherine Moore and her daughter, are getting quite a kick out of it.  I encouraged Catherine to share some of her winter photos with us, and she most graciously has done that.  So today, I share with my readers the wonders of winter in Norwich, Norfolk.  A huge thank to Catherine for being so generous in allowing me access to such a large collection.  I will probably have to break this up into several blogs in order to let you enjoy the beauty of winter for a while with our friends in England.

I love the photo of this playhouse in the midst of a garden.  I feel as though I could stroll up to the door and knock on it, and find a gnome or a hobbit peering through the windows to see who has come for a visit.  What a magical setting for a child's playhouse.

You can almost see goose bumps coming up on this chilly apple.  It is probably happy for the stocking cap of snow to keep in the warmth.

Gone are the days of basking in the sun in this garden chair.  Those days will return, but for now there is snow, snow, and more snow.

This swing set got an extreme winter makeover from several inches of the white powdery stuff.

As far as eye can see, there is snow.  Snow on the footpaths, snow in the fields, snow in the treetops, and snow under heels.

Our friend, Jasper, is knee deep in snow.  He's wondering where all this stuff came from and what has happened to the grass in his yard.

The snow is coming down hard in this view from an upper-story window.  The line of trees at the far end of the field in the distance is nearly obliterated from sight.

The rosy sky paints an excellent water-colour sunset as a backdrop for the snowy field.

The posties have to keep making the rounds even with the roads and post boxes piled high with snow.

Mother nature shows off her handiwork on this windscreen.  It looks as though angels have been lying on this car making ice angels.

Another stunning example of angels playing in the ice on the windscreen.

Finally we leave you with the handiwork of an earth angel's art in the snow.

United Kingdom Under a Thick Blanket of Snow

The United Kingdom is now an enchanted land of ice and snow.  I know it brings hardship with all that ice and snow, but the Brits are keeping their sense of humour with their snow sculpting.  They are also capturing breathtaking images of the beautiful devastation that has crippled transportation and brought the nation to its feet, if not its knees.  I hope you are all staying warm as you can.

Real Heroes Walk Amongst Us

I just got an email that while it is not entirely accurate in details, it is true.   It is about Medal of Honor recipient, Ed Freeman, who died in August of 2008.  He was a Vietnam War hero.  Apparently the point of the email is to speak badly about the American press.  I strongly feel that such editorializing of a powerful story pulls attention away from the real story.  The text of the email that has been circulating ever since Ed's death is included in the snopes.com link.  Wikipedia provides lots of good information without the sensationalizing bits about media coverage of rock stars and other famous people.

The only point that should be made is that Ed Freeman was a hero in every sense of the word.  He risked his life over and over again to rescue wounded soldiers on the battlefield, under machine gun fire, so those kids might have a chance to live.  It's nice to know that Ed made it to the age of 80, since he could easily have been killed during one of his many rescue missions during the Vietnam war.

In the numerical rendering, today's date is a palindrome, unless you are British or use their way of writing dates, as I generally do.  If so, then you'll have to wait until February 1, 2010 to read this entry.  Otherwise the numerical date will merely be repeating itself repeating itself.

Same Sex "Marriage" Begins in NH

New Hampshire is bringing in the new year by acknowledging the word "marriage" for same sex civil unions.  A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but it's not likely to be recognized as such in other states.  It seems to me we should either call all such legal arrangements, whether gay or straight, "marriage" or "civil unions."  Separate but equal is still discrimination and isn't any more equal than when African-Americans had "separate but equal" restrooms, water fountains, schools, etc.
